CYCLE SARDINIA’S SOUTH AND EAST COASTS

The Italian island of Sardinia is a cycling paradise with nearly 2000 kilometres of coastline, hidden beaches and a mountainous interior. The south is a hidden gem which remains relatively unspoiled, teeming with wildlife, prehistoric sites and some of the most alluring beaches on the island.
This ride explores the rolling coastal roads from the islands capital Cagliari through popular resorts around Villasimius and deep into the valleys towards Jerzu.
The heartland of Sardinia’s east coast is the wild Supramonte region which delivers some of the most dramatic scenery from the beautiful beach lined coast to the rugged inner mountain ranges. Sheer limestone cliffs, wildflowers and wildlife from boar to birds of prey roam the plateaus and valleys.
The route ventures over the mountain pass from Arbatax to Orosei before arriving back on the coast and heading north to Olbia. The dramatic diversity of the beaches, valleys and mountains in between are not to be missed.

Our rides are designed for cyclists of all abilities, each stage can be completed in a day, however aim for more or less according to your schedule, fitness & the weather. There are many places to see and stay on route so set your own pace and plan your rest stops to suit.
Stage 1. Cagliari to Costa Rei
Leaving Cagliari, warm up along the easy beach cycle path through Poetto for a day touring the idyllic coastline of southern Sardinia. Discover pristine beaches with aqua blue, crystal clear water from Geremeas to Torre delle Stelle and Villasimius while keeping an eye out for secluded, quiet coves along the route.
Enjoy the winding climb from Villasimius around hairpin turns and the thrilling descent to Cala Sinzias through Sardinia’s wild and fragrant flora and fauna, the natural landscape is arid but packed with wildlife. Small rocky islands just out to sea and hilltop forts overhead regularly punctuate the stunning scenery.
Stage 2. Costa Rei to Arbatax
Leaving the coast, the route heads inland through valleys carved between the mountains. acre after acres of vineyards and olive groves line the road along the gentle ascent to Tertenia and onwards through the stunning hills around Jerzu. Away from the cultivated farming fields the region is densely populated with cactus, bamboo, pine forests and wildflowers. An exhilarating, swift descent leads out of the valley to Cardedu.
On arrival in Bari Sardo, take a short detour to the coast at Torre di Bari. Catch a breath of sea air and take a rest stop on the shady beach before heading on through Tortoli to the picturesque market and harbour town of Arbatax.
Stage 3. Arbatax to Orosei
Time for a mountain crossing! The cycle path leaving Tortoli leads to Lotzorai, the start of a gradual ascent to 1017m above sea level. the Supramonte plateau and a few short descents on the way up provide an opportunity to catch a breath and give your legs a break. Of course, from the top the only way is down, down, down…
The route travels through the epic Parco Nazionale del Golfo di Orosei and Gennargentu, Sardinia’s largest national park. Awe-inspiring views across the rugged, ever-evolving landscape and the spectacular coastline of Golfo di Orosei are the reward for all the climbing. This is Sardinia at it’s wildest, most untamed and arguably at it’s best.
Stage 4. Orosei to Olbia
A short climb from Oresei sets course back towards the sea on this final stage. the lush landscape alternates between farmland, coastline and several nature reserves on route to the islands northern province of Olbia-Tempio. Undulating, rolling roads pass through small beach towns on route to La Caletta, a harbour town popular with kite surfers.
Further up the coast the roadside cycle path through Budoni leads to the hill climb towards San Teodoro, a picturesque market town and an excellent spot to refuel and rest. Keep watch for Isola Tavolara, a striking mountain island just off the coast, which signals the approach to metropolitan Olbia.
